"Goodbye U.S. Army.........
...........Welcome Bundeswehr !"

A new beginning and a name with tradition: RHÖN-KASERNE

Rhön-KaserneIn 1994 the Panzerartilleriebataillon (Artillery Batallion) 355 not only moved their howitzers to the former U.S. Installation. They also took the name of their, now closed barracks in Oberwildflecken, with them.

When the U.S. Army left Wildflecken in 1994, many people thought this would mean the end of any military presence in the Rhoen-area on the long run. Only a few German units had moved into the abandoned buildings at the former US Military and Civilian Activity.

Besides the Artillery Batallion 355 there was only the Engineer-Company 350, which had formerly been stationed in Hammelburg. These units were later joined by the recently activated 5th company of Supply-Batallion 102. But this wasn’t enough to keep a large complex, as the Wildflecken intallation actually was, alive.

The final push came when the Bundeswehr decided to station the "German Army Warfighting Simulation Centre" in Wildflecken.

Unfortunately in 2002 all units except the "Warfighting Simulation Centre" have been deactivated.

The training-area is still being used by Nato-partners und the German Infantry School.
