"Goodbye U.S. Army.........
...........Welcome Bundeswehr !"

A new beginning and a name with tradition: RHÖN-KASERNE

Rhön-KaserneWhen in 1994 the US Army left the Wildflecken installation, it was decided, to close the Bundeswehr (German Army) post at Oberwildflecken and move all units across the valley to the former US post. Since former Camp-Wildflecken didn't really have a name by then, they simply brought the name "Rhön-Kaserne" for their new home with them.

The former liason-cell of the German Army to the US Training-Command, now became the Headquarters of the Bundeswehr Truppenübungsplatz Wildflecken (WTA).
Later the German Training-Areas of Hammelburg, Ohrdruf and Schwarzenborn as well as the Hammelburg based Tank-Drivers-Traing-Center were also assigned to the new WTA HQ.

In 1998 the Bundeswehr decided to station the "German Army Warfighting Simulation Centre" in Wildflecken. The center calls Wildflecken it's home to the present day.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing troop-reduction in 2002, all Wildflecken based units except the Warfighting Simulation Center and WTA-HQ had to be deactivated.

Today the VN-Ausbildungszentrum (United Nations Training Center) uses the training-area and some of the Wildflecken facilities for the training of German units prior to deployment.

Besides that, the training-area is still being used by units of all Nato-partners.
